There was a bumper crop of Cardinals around my house this year. I keep
seeing a young male, in the process of turning red, and he has only one
leg. He gets around very well, on the ground and on the tree limbs. He
doesn't try to fly to the feeder. His right leg is ok and he uses his
left wing to balance himself when he's on the ground. Sure hope he can
grow up and be a regular bird. Frieda in SC
Frieda, I had Robin like that. Every year there are a few maimed birds.
I have grackles and others. I guess it is part of nature.

We have our share of one legged birds, too; mostly quail, but others, too...
It seems like most of the problem is related to them trying to fly across
roads too low, and almost, but not quite, clearing oncoming cars...
Or, standing safely next to a road until a car comes, and then panicking and
flying directly in front of the car when it does.
And, of course, here in Sun City West, and the other surrounding *adult*
(read OLD FOLKS) communities, the birds are in abundance because we FEED
them, but the local drivers simply don't SEE them, or don't react fast
enough to miss them, or simply don't CARE... The cars don't always QUITE
kill them, but they get a leg now and then... Seems like these birds would
figure this out eventually, but maybe not... Maybe it's just Darwin at
work...
