Tammie - It does sound a bit cat like but Forest Hills is part of New
York CIty. A quiet part but not in wildcat country. Too bad though. It
would be a grand sight to see a bob cat slinking aound here. Maybe its
somebodies pet. Who knows? So I'm still trying to figure it out. I
need to go out with a flashlight but there's too many private back
yards to trespass through.

Just to confuse you further, keep in mind that it may not be a bird. The
last time we experience something like this was a few years ago. Every time
we went out fishing on a particular lake, we'd start to hear a really eerie
scream right around 9:30 pm .... every time. Someone finally told me it was
likely a bobcat or lynx!
Could be a hawk of some kind too. Or a blackbird. Lord knows how screechy
they can be!

Not being very much of a birder, I'm at a loss to identify one that has
been screaming-whining every night now for months across the street
from my house in Forest Hills Queens in New York City. I know the songs
and callss of all the more comon birds here but this one is new to me.
The sound is a single pitched very raucous and loud scream that
reminds me a little of a rusty-hinged door opening. A little like a
jay also. It lasts for maybe 1 or 2 seconds. Its not a screech owl.
Already heard a recording of one. Only hear it at night from around
10-midnight. I'm really curious to know what in the world this is!
