Thanks to everyone who replied to an earlier posting about getting a
variety of birds. I changed to nyjer seed and things are going great.
I'm also going to start feeding sunflower hearts.
BUT, both of my feeders spill food like crazy! Half of the seed - or
more - ends up on the ground.
For the nyjer I'm using a WoodLink Magnum Thistle Feeder. It's great
the way it gets covered with Finches - so I like the style, but the
ground is turning black under it.
For the more generic food - where I'm going to start feeding sunflower
hearts - I have a tube feeder, "Squirrel Be Gone Feeder" by Perky Pet.
When I was putting millet-based food in it, the house finches loved it
but spilled a lot.
Is this just the way that bird feeders work? Any ideas on alternate
designs?
Thanks,
Bob
Most of what you are seeing under the nyjer feeder is probably shells, not
seed. They do pile up thick, and I also thought they were seeds (and waste)
when I first saw it. Someone at Wild Birds Unlimited told me to look
closely, and I would probably see tiny shells. He was right! So, it is a
natural byproduct (the finches snap the shells to extract the seed inside),
and you need some way to dispose of it -- rake it up or attach a tray
underneath, which will then need to be frequently emptied.
