Sun bath?

Yesterday on a hot humid (for us) sunny day, we saw a house finch sitting in
a position that made us think he was injured or sick. It had its head
thrown back sideways to expose its breast, its tail and wings were fanned
and its feathers were fluffed. Did he have heat stroke? Then we saw more
finches doing the same thing including goldfinches. No adult male house
finch was seen doing this. We've watched birds for years and rather closely
during the last four. We have never seen this behavior before. I did not
see anyone doing "it" today.
