According to

they are year-round birds in much of the Eastern/mid-West of the U.S.,
including all of Illinois.
However, they do migrate northward to breed. Perhaps your grackles have
gone North to do so, and will return. Just a guess.

A few weeks ago I got tired of scrubbing grackle poop off my deck every
time the grandkids visited and I moved my general population feeder to the
edge of the yard. In the past I've always just taken it down until Fall.
Then a week ago I missed the birds and moved the feeder back -- and I
haven't seen a single grackle since! Were they really just migrating
through? I'm in East Central Illinois.
