What puzzles me is why you haven't seen or heard Winter Wrens.
When we were up in Grand Marais, MN last summer, the place was
a chorus of Winter Wren songs. This map:

says you ought to have plenty in your area.
To be fair, winter wrens, although noisy as hell, are often difficult to
see. She may well have heard them but not seen them -- and they do prefer a
sort of bushy or forest-understory habitat, and I don't know if that's
around in her area.
We have a VERY successful pair of Bewick's wrens who raise at least two
batches of kids every year for the last several years, nesting in a bushy
treeline between us and our neighbors. They're almost pests, there are so
many of them. And they're so feisty.
