I heard this bird singing today in my backyard and I didn't recognize the
song. Grabbed the binoculars and went to investigate...... spotted a house
wren on top of the utility pole singing it's heart out! First ever wren
sighting for me. Then I got nervous because it swooped down onto the tree
swallow house. Will a wren just break eggs or will it actually harm
nestlings??
Congratulations, Tammie. I agree with Jack that House Wrens can be
agressive competitors for nest cavities, but I would guess your
swallows should be OK as they are half grown now and have lots of
protection.
What puzzles me is why you haven't seen or heard Winter Wrens.
When we were up in Grand Marais, MN last summer, the place was
a chorus of Winter Wren songs. This map:

says you ought to have plenty in your area.
