I've lived in upstate NY [near Schenectady] for most of my 55 years
and though I'm not a 'real birder' by any means a bird as cool as the
Pileated would stand out. I think they are pretty uncommon in
this area-- I know it is rare that I see one.
When I bought this house 20 yrs ago there was a nest in an old elm
that had some young Pileated woodpeckers in it. I don't think I
ever saw the male. Squirrels [I'm guessing- maybe coons?] got them
before they feathered out.
I can well remember when we lived in Delmar, NY(just outside of Albany) from
1963 until 1967 (9 - 13 years old for me) and we saw our first Pileated.
My Dad, who is now 80, swears that they were 2 times as large as the ones we
now see in North Florida.
