down... perhaps it's a candidate...

I don't know what it could be except a male Northern Cardinal with its
crest folded down (they can do that at will), or perhaps missing for
some reason. When there's no other choice, you have to accept the
obvious and view discrepencies as either observer error or atypical
appearance.
