In the end I resorted to telephoning the RSPCA which is an animal
charity in the UK. My fireplace is open, and the bird was getting
closer and closer and making louder noises. I thought it made a sound
like a herring gull at one stage, so was too much of a coward to tackle
one of those.
However a nice chap from the RSPCA managed to get it out, and it turned
out to be a wood pigeon. We let it go in the back garden and it flew
away, seemingly unscathed.
