Goldfinches

I have been blessed with about 26 or more Goldfinches lately. It started out as one and the 6 and then 10 and now they have invited there whole group. I am not complaining because I love the goldfinches and that is 26 more than I had all spring and summer. They are very messy though. I think they waste much more than they eat. The snow below the feeders has piles of seed. I have an eighteen port feeder that they can empty in about 2 days and like I said, most of it is on the ground. Is this normal or is it just my feeders. Any suggestions as to how to keep from losing that much thistle.
