Ann,
I feed the birds a homemade suet cake made from lard, cornmeal, flour
and oats. The cake is placed in one of those wire cages and hung from
the side of a large tree. The suet cake crumbs that fall due to the
feeding activity get stuck in the bark of the tree. The creepers love
to feed on those crumbs. Sometime they get up to the source of the
crumbs, the cake itself. They eat from the cake only for a little while
as their natural urge to fly down to the bottom of a tree and feed
while working up takes over.
