Nerve Wracking Day

Hi Group,

We spent today on and off the highway, taking our truck to the dealership
for some warranty work. We left here at about 6:15 this morning (the
dealership is 2.5 hours away and it was a long job so we had to be there for
9:00 am). I don't think we even got 10 miles out of town before another
pickup passed us ............... and clipped a MOOSE right in front of us!
This turned out to be a fellow we've known for years. He was alright but it
looked like the mirror on the passenger side of his truck was finished... we
don't know about the door itself. We don't know about the moose either. It
got clipped somewhere in the head, forehead or jaw I have no idea. It was
slowly walking away but it didn't appear to be fatally injured. Needless to
say, our friend was quite shaken but WE were quite grateful in this instance
that he had passed us!

Halfway to the dealership, we come across an 18-wheeler accident that
apparently happened at least a day ago. Single vehicle but this guy is the
luckiest person I've ever seen, if he survived. The truck was finished....
slammed sideways into a rock cut. :( We heard later that apparently, he
DID survive.

On the way home late this afternoon still on the main highway, we see
flashing lights: another big rig in the ditch. He slid for well over 100
feet through the snowbank but damage looked minimal and I doubt there were
any injuries.

Then almost home on our secondary highway, TWO more moose in the exact same
spot as this morning! Of course, with it being already dark at 5:00 pm and
still snowing, we weren't going fast by any stretch of the imagination....
we suspected the critters would still be around and they didn't disappoint.

What a hair-raising day! Needless to say, we were extremely relieved to
finally just GET HOME!! And in one piece. The bonus to this day is an
early Christmas gift from my hubby. He couldn't hide it with me right there
in the truck so he just handed it over when we got home: a brand new triple
tube bird feeder! Cool!!! Big kisses to him, of course. :)

So now we're exhausted ... the tension of the highway is fading and I'm sure
we'll sleep like logs tonight. No exciting birds to be seen today.... just
crows, ravens and pigeons. And a chickadee. ;)

Oh yeah!! I also decided yesterday that I'm going to join my town's
Conservation Club so I called them. I'll be helping with the Christmas Bird
Count between Christmas and New Year's and the club is very hopeful that I
can be of great assistance with anything to do with birds. I'll do my best.
:)

Happy Holidays!
