Re: where's our birds?

Hi -
a poster from Charlotte, North Carolina here.

We live in a suburban neighborhood and we have had feeders out for years. We've always had tons of birds - titmice, sparrows, cardinals, bluejays, wrens, etc.

We went away for most of this summer, and what with all the summer bugs, etc. we didn't worry about the empty feeders.

Well, we refilled them a few weeks ago and we are dismayed that there are so few birds about. We still see titmice mostly and a very small number of cardinals, but that's pretty much it - although we did have a juncko yesterday. Not a single bluejay, which is my favorite :(

My concern is with the apparent huge decline in birds around here! Usually within a day of filling the feeders, we are overrun with birds, but not now.

Any ideas? Nothing significant has happened in our area that i know of other than our new neighbor cleared out several trees this summer, but our lot and the rest of the neighborhood is heavily forested so I'm not sure that's the cause.

thanks for any thoughts on the matter!

It may take a few weeks for the birds to discover that the feeders are full again.
