My guess:
1. Birds in the affected areas took advantage of the tailwind and left.
2. Birds north of there are waiting for better weather to continue.
3. Most birds that got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time just
hunkered down and will be fine. As always, the weakest individuals won't
survive.
Migrating birds have been coping with fall hurricanes since the end of
the last ice age. The continued existence of a species is good evidence
that its members know what to do, and that its nesting success is
sufficient to replace the inevitable losses.
Worry about people, not birds--humans are the slow learners who make
permanent homes in hazardous environments.
