Oh yes, I *love* twisty descents - one of my favorite (probably my
very favorite) places to ride - the more wicked the better - but I do
not understand the need to shift out of top gear while going downhill
(not a racer; not a spinner).

Dunno. Maybe you're not in top gear yet. Anyway, holding onto the hoods with the brakes and shifters at your fingers is pretty nice. My Bianchi has the shifters at the end of the bars and the brakes on hoods. Was useful when tucked but not otherwise.
