Keep in mind that, for small hands, it will still be difficult,
perhaps impossible, to try and shift from the drops. If that's
what someone is trying to do, they need to adapt to shifting on the
hoods. I'll also point out that you can get all the brake power
you need from up on top as well; a death-grip on the drops just
isn't required for braking like it used to be in the old days.
The change from top exit brake cable on the lever to side exit brake
cable required that the the lever pivot move. The change in lever
pivot changes the ergonomics of braking from the hoods.
I'm not sure what the effect would be, but I have always ridden with
original Campagnolo levers with top exiting cable and fine braking
over the hood with thumb on the lever body is convenient enough for me
to do some fast descents. I get down in the hooks only if the road is
rough or I anticipate hard braking.
With the top exit levers I never wanted to brake from the hoods,
even though my hands are strong and big enough. Still running
single pivot brakes I changed to side exit brake levers with the
improved ergonomics from the hoods. Now I routinely brake from the
hoods, and often so hard that I must be careful to brace myself.
It is a comfortable position for me and I can change to a climbing
position (standing) more easily. Most city riding, I want to see over
the cars if they don't happen to be black windowed, jacked up trucks,
so I ride upright on the tops where I can brake adequately as I bike
messenger my way through dense traffic.
To reiterate: the mechanical advantage of the brake lever did not
change for. The brakes did not change. The reach to the lever with
respect to the hood did not change. All that changed is the brake
lever pivot, and that makes all the difference.
I think most levers are still 4:1 and mine are certainly that ands
work with single pivot 1:1 calipers nicely.
