All the same these matters do not pass without notice. I for one
noticed that you offered, and that none of those who put such loud
store by hard data took you up on the offer.

I had a similar experience on rec.audio.tubes a dozen years ago,
though in that case there was some deliberation on my part. I was
being persecuted, for commercial reasons, by the hangers-on of a
transformer winder; one of them made much of being an engineering
graduate of Stanford. So I offered him over ninety observations on
thirty amps to prove a point he scornfully disputed, knowing he would
ignore me, as he did. For three or four years he couldn't work out why
the rest of the engineers from that day forward treated him with
increasing disdain and finally I just told him: he had shown his
contempt for science. Several of the others wrote to me later that
that was the moment when they changed their relative opinions of this
Stanford engineer and of me. Respect for real science is rooted a lot
deeper than one would believe, for instance from the shallow credulity
of some posters here.
