Re: So we were drooling over the 09 Kona catalog as I stopped by the LBS for coffee

Some fun stuff, like the neato "Dew Drop":

Should list for $700. Alu frame--nice and rigid. Tour on it, commute,
whatever. Fun stuff. The componentry qualifies as good enough to bang
around town or  ride across the country. Don't know if I'd trust the
hubset to go all the way to Timbuktu.

But the one I like most is the Honky Tonk:

$1K. Look ma, downtube shifters! Was designed for the Portland market--
funny, if I made a bike for Portland--I'd make it *aluminum*, duh. ;-)
Still, it's very handsome with the skinny tubes and it's pretty much
what 90% of what road bikes should look like on sales floors.

It's a really fun catalog this year, have a browse, much better color
palate than last year, which was too tropical. ;-)

Designed for the Portland market? Portland, Oregon? Well, then it
should have fenders (is there enough room under that crown?), and when
I am sliding around on wet pavement, I like to have my hands on the
bars -- so STI/Ergo would be in order, and I would prefer something I
could put away wet -- so aluminum would be nice, and discs would be
good (although not necessary). I understand that DT shifting doesn't
gum up like STI can with a lot of rain, but I have been commuting with
STI for maybe 15 plus years with STI, and it has been fine -- with a
little WD40 bath now and then. Before that, I was on DT and before
that a fixed gear, but the fixie limited my routes home significantly.
Really, if you live close in on the flats and just want to get to work
and back, a SS/fixie is the best thing in winter -- particularly if
you tend to ignore your bike like I do. -- Jay Beattie.
