My bike is a Trek 620 from 1983 with a 126mm spacing for the rear wheel. How else do you suppose someone would get a decent 27" wheel these days?
After much investigation, I am thinking of building a rear wheel with a
Shimano freehub, a 27" rim and a Shimano 8-speed cassette.
find through searching both the net and usenet. I was forced into the idea
of building a wheel from scratch by a complete dearth of anything
available ready to ride.
That might have sounded smart-assed. It wasn't meant to be. Building a 27"
wheel is the normal thing to do in order to get a decent wheel these days.
Though I'm sure you could order one a bit cheaper from

No offense taken. I was glad to hear that it's done at all and I am not
pursuing some half-baked idea.
All the 27' wheels being sold at Harris have freewheel hubs. I was
hoping to build a 27" wheel with a freehub.- Hide quoted text -

If you would like to use a nicer 27" rim than the CR-18 I would
recommend the Velocity synergy or dyad. If you want the dyad, though,
you will have to call to see if you can get one in drillings other
than 48h.
