Yep, can happen, but you really have to have a lot of road grit remaining after a winter of lots of sanding/salting due to ice. I've managed to wear out 1/2 of a set of Campag Record pads in a 100 km (ca. 60 miles) ride, due to rain and lots of road grit. I also note that the same type of grit has caused me to replace a Connex 1008 (10s) chain after just 900 km (500 miles) despite good cleaning and maintenance procedures.
How clean are your roads right now?
