I think we are mixing two separate effects, both due to wheel mass. One is
the stored kinetic energy in the rotating wheel, which I believe is
negligible. The other is the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheel. As I
understand it, this comes into play only in steering with no hands. In
ordinary riding, balancing is done by steering WITH the hands, and
gyroscopic forces are not important.
