Thus, if the total cross sectional area of the disk tab is only three
times
that of the bosses, there will be *less* stress on the disk brake tab.
That's an even smaller difference than I suspected.
"if". but the disk tabs are _smaller_ because the caliper spec is for
8mm. so what does that mean???
changing the spec? I don't follow.
change in spec OR mounting since it's entirely unnecessary. sorry to not
play that little game.
Hmm. Apparently the only game you are willing to play is the "obfuscation
by irrelevant facts and tangents" game.
Thread Synopsis:
"Jim": Forward mounted disk brakes are bad because cast materials have
lower tensile ratings than compressive ratings.
Frank: So just make the cast materials a little bit bigger.
"Jim": Show me the math.
Ben: <Gives formula, as a simple ratio>
"Jim": Euphemized expletive! <gives some numbers, some of which are actually
relevant, then patronizingly tells me to "take it from there, it's just a
simple ratio">
Ben: Okay, given those numbers, here's how much bigger you'd have to make
it such that the stress would be the same as that experienced in cantilever
bosses.
"Jim": But the current spec calls for it to be smaller than that!
Ben: Umm... this whole exercise was to determine how much bigger you would
have to make it for the proposed design change!
from one viewpoint, it's bizarre how simple math appears to defeat
participants in a "tech" newsgroup. but from another, once we realize
that arguing the facts is not the objective, then all becomes clear
again. it's a shame. really.
Indeed :/
