I wonder how the exchange would have gone, if, when the $7.50 was rung up, you had simply said:
"Gosh, when you told me 'it'll be a couple of dollars labor' I understood you to mean two dollars" and maybe "That's why I told you to go ahead."
I find that playing dumb (or at least hiding any offence felt) sometimes works wonders when someone has you over a barrel.
Instead, you tell us in your original post that "I said that was crazy."
There are indeed some communication issues here. Going on the (verbal) attack may help to get what one wants in some venues, but not all. I'm not saying there weren't problem on the side of the LBS, I wasn't there. But from your description, you may not have handled it optimally either.
