Merck's dedication to training and abilities would still make him the
greatest if he was riding today.
And he would have a better training program as well.
Heh. He said `training.' Heh heh. Heh heh.
He said 'training -Program-', lol.
Funny thing...back in the day, before 'jogging' and 'fun runs', when
people would look at you funny if you ran down the street in a
wifebeater and boxer shorts, there wasn't this idea of 'training' on a
bicycle.
Guys who wanted to ride places, just did it, and it wasn't that hard,
even in places that were quite hilly. Riding in Pennsylvania, with
some really steep hills, with cobblestones, I've seen guys riding
because they lived there and had no choice - didn't have cars.
One of the things I wish I'd done differently back then was to ride my
bike with a sense of 'training' and getting better, using the hills I
had available to me. In University, if we wanted to go to the
neighboring town, we just rode there. Now, people train on those
roads, as if it's a 'thing', the routes are in 'Biking in America'
books.
Living next to a famous trail or race and not being aware then
learning years later what you missed is of teh suck.
The concept of doing intervals is not confined to
bicycling, or endurance sports, or athletics.
At one time medical school was a four year endurance
run where the participants learned the contents of
Gray's Anatomy and several other books while sleep
deprived. For graduation they went to work in a hospital
for a year with no sleep. Any time you extend yourself
to fulfill an intention it is interval training with
equal benefit; or more.
(Anybody know what medical school and internship is
like now in regard to reduced sleep?)
