Yeah, I've moved rattlers with a frame pump a couple of times - there's
no reason to kill 'em. They do a job.
If they are anywhere near the house, I kill them.
Well, most people are reluctant to catch and release them elsewhere, and
understandably so. I would do it.
So far this year I haven't killed any (haven't found them close), and
I've conjectured it is because the cats are killing off too much of
their food.
That's entirely plausible. With less prey there's not much reason to hang around.
I don't know, I am funny about moving animals off the road (or trail) -
I've moved big ol' banana slugs, tarantulas, gophers, a lot of snakes
(mostly king and gopher snakes), a praying mantis once... It seems
like a good thing to do.
There is no reason to just kill stuff arbitrarily. I think doing so
is weird. But if I perceive a safety issue, I have no problem killing
the "threat."
I understand that aspect of why most people tend to kill 'em but I'd still rather
not see the snake killed. I'd still find a way to move it if it was my place.
If it were easy for me to move them far away, including the time it
takes, I certainly would be glad to do that. That isn't the
situation. (I have pets to support, you know.) I get no pleasure in
killing them, I just can't have poisonous snakes that close. The
species is not endangered.
I sort of like the "cat solution," if it turns out it really is
working.
Actually, it usually goes like this:
1- The cats catch the food and play with it.
2- The dogs kill the food before the cats are done playing with it.
Is Ricco a rat or a snake?
