i was wondering if he was trying to think in terms of his audience's mentality, and was explaining to them in "their terms". (this is something i imagine you doing too, but i don't see you reducing something to such a black and white statement that you wouldn't stand behind it.) and then i thought that maybe he said it like that to make is sound more dramatic, and now i'm remembering you complaining about his melodrama in your original post, so i'm finally getting it a little, lol :)

It is a competitive sport, so there are going to be abrasive,
driven personalities in it.  That doesn't necessarily make
them "bad guys."  Hinault was nicknamed the Badger, but he
never went after anyone with a 2x4 (AFAIK).

agreed, and i should have written this to patterson earlier when i was replying to him- afaicr, i haven't ever thought of "big tex" as a bad person. and the way he gave interviews after races sometimes reminded me a little of a hedgehog, and made me want to protect him from people who are just waiting for him to screw up. (how do you like me now, lance?)
