They've greatly improved the bicycle this year, moving to a Cro-Mo
frame, which is a very good idea for a commute bicycle, and some sort of
a chain guard. Other improvements include moving to an adjustable height
quill stem from a threadless headset, and moving from 26" wheels to 700C
wheels. Looks like they've been reading my web sites! $649-20%-5%.

Shopping at REI is certainly more trendy that Target. But most bike
commuters are anything but trendy, well maybe in Portland and other
trendy places they are. In Texas we're mostly just poor, or illegal,
or both. But that's changing, even here.

I've always thought that the Novara bikes compared pretty favorably in
a price/performance sense to the brands pushed by the LBSes. And $650
w/ 20% sale makes the Transfer a pretty good deal in my book. But
what, other than the dyno-hub, does it have over the $150 Schiwnn that
you posted about last week?

I didn't go examine the Schwinn, were the chain rings riveted to the
crank like on so many bike I see at walmart? (and on the diswasher's
commuter bike).

Barring any other difference, other than the trendyness factor, we're
looking a a difference of $380 for a dyno-hub and light. That doesn't
seem unreasonable. It ain't gonna be a SON at that price, or a
DH-3N70. I couldn't find a price on the Joytech, but the Shimano goes
for around $150, then you gotta have shorter spokes and re-lace yer
wheel and all that. Having it come from the factory seems like a
pretty doggone good solution. I'm kinda worried that this Joytech hub
might be made in China, and Japan is about as far as I'm willing to go
in that direction.
