Hi. thanks for replying. I had surgery in apr. of '07. Yes, almost 2
years ago for a (double) inguinal hernia. I took the full 6 weeks off
like the doctor said from any activity. But, I think I went back into
it too hard and fast and reaggravated it.. I like to push very hard
when i ride. So, I have been having soreness on and off since then. i
have been seeing doctors ever since also. I tried physical therapy and
treatment with ibuprofen which helps. I also used lidocaine patches
which numb the area well and ice, heat, etc. I took the 5 months off
to see if it made a difference by the doctors orders I just switched
to a different doctor to get another opinion. Both docotrs said the
hernia is fixed right and there is not another one.The first doctor
told me that I need to lay off anything strenuous. Then after the 5
months he said that it could be a pulled groin (which is doubtful
cause the pain is right along the incision). So that is when I went to
see someone else. We talked and the new doc said that it could last a
long time and it could also be permanent!!! He said that I can start
again, just do it slowly. He also recommended some nerve treatments by
injection (kind of like cortizone) which would only be temporary, so i
refused. Then he said a permanent fix would be to cut the nerves near
the area as a last resort. I think I need to just take it easier, but
it's hard for me to do that. I am 39 yrs. old You are right about it
taking longer than they say!! If I knew that now. I wouldn't have went
back into it full force. How long before you were 100% ?

Chris, I had a hernia repair with synthetic mesh in 2005. I had to
lay off the bike for about 3 months or so, until I felt I could pedal
correctly. But after that, my fitness came back fairly quickly. Be
sure to take it really easy during your recovery so you'll heal
properly. Now I'm in better shape than I've ever been, although that
may not be saying much. So I haven't really answered your question,
have I? But I was wondering if you had your hernia repaired or not?
If so, when? I found the surgery to be quite successful, although you
will still have slight intermittent pain from it for a lot longer than
the doctors say you will. Eventually the pain went away completely.
I found it really important to keep my weight down. I really love my
rigatoni and fettuccine, but if I let myself start to get a pot gut,
it seems to stretch the mesh and cause pain. Don't let yourself fret
over it. You WILL regain the ability to cycle pain-free. Good luck
with your recovery!
