even better is the camera that uses the same memory (SD) as your PDA,
of course downloading the maps to the PDA before you go makes more
sense - especially if you can plug your GPS into your PDA (delorme &
palm work well together - YMMV) . Conversely you could get a GPS that
lets you download maps directly to it, but I like the bigger screen on
the PDA, or the laptop if I'm forced to motor.

My iPhone has the maps right on it. Now I just need to remember to ride where there is service:-)

Ah, the joys of Cingular/AT&T or whatever they're calling themselves this month.

One thing I'll miss, starting in 2008, is all the rural wireless coverage up in the Santa Cruz mountains that's on the old analog AT&T AMPS network, which you can only use if you're on Verizon or Sprint with a tri-mode phone. AT&T will be quick to turn this off as soon as they are legally allowed to do so, since none of their GSM subscribers can use this (well a very, very few with a GAIT phone can). I ran into the same issue in the Florida Everglades, where I was roaming onto AT&T's AMPS network from my Verizon phone, while all the AT&T users had no coverage at all. The FCC dropped the ball on this, they should have only allowed AMPS to be turned off if no geographic coverage, at least on public roads, would be lost. The bicycling community should have lobbied them.

I hope the next generation of iPhone adds a GPS and voice dialing (how on earth did they forget to include voice dialing?!).
