Don't you have a lot of East Indian Hindu types up that way? That is just a rumor I heard, or is it?
We do have a large Indian community, consisting mostly of Sikhs
from The Punjab (but also many from Fiji. Also Christian &
Muslim people of Indian descent from Fiji, and from African
countries as well.) And we do have many Hindu religion followers.
I kind of enjoy watching the Hindu religion movies on the multicultural
TV channel. There are also Chinese and Korean "Coronation Street"
shows that I also enjoy (the Chinese one is better; the Korean
one I find too maudlin.) One can easily follow the gist without
English subtitles.
We have that here too. My wife sometimes watches a soap opera in English and then turns to the Mexican or Indian channel and watches it again, only spoken in their language and subtitled in English. Sometimes the results are hilarious.
We also have lots of Filipinos, Swedes, Italians, Hungarians (I
remember when the refugees came here,) Czechs (I remember when
the refugees came here,) Italians, Ukrainians, Poles, Australians,
Scots, indigenous Natives, Irani, Iraqi, Americans, Chinese,
Japanese,Viet Namese, Norwegians, Danes, Trinidadian/Tobagans,
Jamaicans, Thai, Algerians, Nigerians, French, Dutch, German,
Australians, New Zealanders, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian,
South African, mad dogs & Englishmen ... heck, my opstairsikah
is Uruguayan (and greatly disappointed by the current soccer
World Cup standings.)
It sounds sort of like my dad described to me in Chicago. If you cross this street it's Italian, that street is Polish, 2 blocks and a left turn and it is Irish, etc. Now there are so many nationalities the neighborhoods are all intermingled. I do remember growing up my dad took me for an international tour within Chicago. He used to go to all the delis for the national or ethnic foods and he would cook an international gourmet dinner after I got to meet all his multi-cultured friends. Back then he could even take me in a bar with him and I could play pinball games while he had a beer with some buddies. We came to California in 1963 and when we did that we got thrown out. He didn't know it was against the law in California.
Now I want to move. In California they shoot at each other.
Lotsa nice people from all over the world, who all want the
same thing -- just to get by in peace, and do some good for
the world and their fellow humanity. Living in Vancouver is
like touring without having to do the hard work of traveling.
Multiculturalism is great. People are great.
cheers,
Tom
