So I took the I-H Road.
Unfortunately, while on this road, it decided to absolutely pour. Not just
sprinkle, or lightly rain, as it had been for most of the ride. No, pounding
hard, drenching rain.
My sustaining thought while flying down the I-H Road in this downpour was of
the Shanghai Restaurant, about 10 miles away. I realized that it was just a
block or two off of my planned route. And the Shanghai is one of my favorite
Chinese restaurants in the greater Seattle area. I would cope with traffic,
with the crap on the shoulder, with the shoulder suddenly disappearing, with
the pounding rain, with water streaming into my eyes and obscuring my
glasses, because I would have lunch at the Shanghai.
Plot: A cyclist heads out on a planned route, but a sudden change
in circumstances induces her to change her plans on the fly,
sending her off on a diversionary adventurette.
Character: A wet & hungry cyclist.
Setting: A highway in the Pacific NorthWest, in the pouring rain.
Grey sky, grey pavement, grey rain, grey spray from the
grey auto traffic, and perhaps some green (greyed by the rain)
forest embroidering the road, interspersed with residential
lots with grey'd-green lawns, and grey buildings.
Mood: Akin to that evoked by Beethoven's hardship/struggle/triumph formula.
Theme/Moral: 1) Setting an immediate goal and adamantly focusing on it
can get us through tough times.
2) Riding is conducive to spontaneity, no matter what the
conditions are.
cheers,
Tom
