Growing up, my friend Ross would step out into the sun and pretty much
burst into flame. 100% English on both sides of the family.

Be careful! While you may not "burn" as easily as some, you're just as
susceptible to skin damage and skin cancer.

Actually not true, the more melanin one has, generally the lower risk in
general you run for skin cancer and similar problems. Of course the
best protection is to limit exposure.

Skin Coloring

The fairer the skin, the greater the risk of skin cancer. Melanin, the
substance that gives skin its color, also blocks some of the ultraviolet
energy from the sun. Nonetheless, this protection is not sufficient, and
contrary to what most people believe, dark-skinned individuals do get
skin cancer. The numbers, however, are much smaller than for those who
are naturally pale.

I spent most of my spare time as a kid on or around the water, either
sailing or swimming or just hanging out at the beach. We never used
sunscreen.

I can only recall getting one sunburn as a child. Even now that I'm
cycling, most of cycling time is not during full sun hours (since it's
mostly back and forth to work). Evenings on the way home from work is
when I mostly get sun I suppose.

BTW this is the worst time of year, close to the solstice, when the sun is
strongest. Late spring is misleading because it's still not so hot in
many places. But the sun is as strong in April as it is in August.

I suppose it also helps I live in Seattle, which is decidely not the
tropics.
