Rear wheel wobbling a lot--bearings, maybe?

I've been off my bike (and consequently off rbm) for a long time. A
number of factors finally got me back on the bike at a fraction of my
previous abilities.
Anyway, took my first long-ish ride in ages today--21 miles from my
house to my office. I had meant it to be a dry-run for commuting. I'll
save you the ride report-- you can get that at my blog
<http://ouij.livejournal.com>--but I did have one mechanical question,
which I'll put to the wisdom of rbm.
My rear wheel has a lot of play. I mean.. a LOT. It wobbles. At first,
I thought I hadn't tightened the quick-release enough, so I stopped and
redid that. But even with the QR at proper tightness, the wheel was
slopping a bit, side-to-side. Is this a bearing issue?
Wish me luck. I'm trying to get my mileage back up, slowly. Full-time
employment means no weekday long rides (foo!), but if I gain enough
strength, commuting might be a good way to get back.
