Real wheel drive with a stick for me. Those I can work on for fun and mileage. A little gear change can turn a 25 MPG pig into a 40 MPG car.
Bill, there are times when I'm sure you have a problem with the laws
of physics.
This is one of those times.
You can gear a car to reduce the engine RPM by 1.4 times, but why
would it not require more fuel per revolution to produce the same
amount of work?
Answer that one and you've solved the world's energy crisis (and
disproved Newton).

Mark,
In this case I can really suggest you think before you post.
Engine wear and energy wasted work as at least the square of the speed.
You don't think those pistons want to go up and down at 3,000 RPM, do you? It takes more energy to drive the pistons than the car sometimes.
Why do you think you put it in a lower gear to slow going down a hill?
I had a '69 Ford Econoline that I took from 11 MPG to 17 by changing the rear from 3.90 to 2.56. I did something similar with a 1961 Rambler by putting in an overdrive and a 3.00:1 rear end and got 38 MPG.
Magic? No. Just common sense. It only takes about 14 HP to hold a 4,000 pound car at 60 MPH and that can be had from even a Flathead 6 at under 1,500 RPM. The van ran about 1,700 but had a 40" larger 6 and could have taken an overdrive on top of that. It puts the same power to the rear wheels but wastes a lot less inside the engine.
Bike Shop guy or not, it is YOU who do not understand.
Car makers still gear their cars for good acceleration in top gear, not optimum mileage. Test drive just about any and you will see this is true. Lexus (I think) is coming out with an 8 speed automatic with a wide enough spread of gears to make for tire burning stop light starts and still have a very low and economical highway cruise.
I know the laws of physics quite well, do you?
Think before you post.
