Knee pain - enforced biking hiatus

My right knee first started hurting about 18 months ago. It flared up
again about 5 months ago and I saw a doctor and had an MRI. It showed
nothing wrong so I was on some anti-inflamatories for a few weeks and
went back to biking. Now it's back again and I'm in my second week of
not commuting by bike (29 miles round trip in NYC).
I saw the doc and once again am back on meds, this time another one
called Diflunisal (Dolobid). The last time I biked there was a sharp
pain at one point on the inside of the knee, feeling like a tendon was
pulled. Usually it just sort of hurts in the middle of the knee but
this is getting a bit more specific. It was feeling pretty good for
the last few days but I forgot to take the pills yesterday and woke up
in the middle of the night realizing that it still hurts.
I just use flat pedals, no SPD. I might try another doctor, namely the
one who did my elbow operation last year at this time. That worked out
splendidly. I think my joints are just aging (I'm almost 54). It's
sort of depressing but if I have to take time off from biking then I'm
doing it now and hopefully not missing the spring and summer.
Maybe time for another MRI. Can one six months after the first show
something? I wonder if insurance will pay for it. Those things are
expensive.
Any advice?
