I find the low-end Garmin (ETrex) is much nicer to use in general than
the low-end Magellan (eXplorist), so I strongly support that conclusion.
(Though one of the major wins for handheld use (Garmin has the controls
at the top, so you can use it one-handed while holding it normally)
is actually a minor loss for using it while it's mounted on the bike -
but only minor, so don't let it scare you off.)
But if you're buying it for the bike, you're better off buying based
on local availability of the accessories you need and not based on
availability in some other city where somebody who commented on it bought
theirs - get the bike mounting bracket and any other accessories you
need at the same time as the GPS, and if the store doesn't carry them
or they're not in stock ask them to order them in and tell them you'll
buy the whole bunch all at once when everything you need is available.

That and a few maps should be all you need. Good to know how to use
them and have them along anyways, since depending on the GPS is a good
way to guarantee that the batteries will die when you're in the middle
of nowhere.

If you're not in fact stupid and immature, why try to look that way?
