And, IIRC, absolutely illegal where Helen lives as well as much of Europe. A flashing red is good for getting attention, it is lousy for giving drivers a fix on your distance. For that you also need a steady red light or lucky reflector.
Illegal when not in addition to an approved British Standard static red light. I have one blinkie & two static rear lights plus red rear reflectors at night. I even use them during the day if visibility is not good, such as in foggy conditions.
I work on the theory that if I'm ever knocked off my bike and the idiot who does it tries to get his or her lawyer to say I was not visible, then my legal beagle can have him/her for breakfast ;-)

Here we've permitted red blinkies in lieu of other rear lights or
reflectors provided the lens of the light will serve as a reflector
when the light is off. Headlights are mandatory though the
requirements are met by a single white LED.
