I've explained this before, but I'll try again.

Is Bush an evil genius or a dummy? Personally, I think he's not very
bright at all. His record prior to becoming governor of Texas is
dismal. I have no doubt he's a talented athlete, and he may have been
a decent pilot. But he's a multiple failure as a businessman. He
certainly wasn't any great shakes in school. He's a non-reader by
admission. His personal life and chemical recreation weren't
particularly admirable either, although he's at least gotten that under
control.

He is, however, a person who is good at grinning, slapping backs and in
general getting along with other guys. He's also a person with
tremendous family connections. I think this combination did things
like: keep him from spending too much time in the reserves; get him a
couple companies to play with (like a Texas oil company); get him off
the hook when he sold stocks before his company crashed; get him a ball
team to play with; get him a governorship to play with.

I think Rove and others recognized him as a fairly nice looking guy
they could wind up and set in front of a microphone and camera. I
think they saw him as capable of sounding "down home" and sincere when
talking to families working little farms, yet chumming it up with the
super-rich who could finance him. I think they recognized he's capable
of the cognitive dissonance that allows him to agree to policies that
favor the super-wealthy yet maintain his religious beliefs.

In short, I think he's a figurehead. I do NOT think he runs the
administration, and I do NOT think he makes the decisions - even though
he may believe he does.

I'm sure you'll disagree, of course. And I'm sure you'll have a good
explanation for the fact that he almost never speaks without a script
and, if necessary, a wire.

But in any case, you asked for my opinion, and there it is.
