It takes a "few" drops, maybe 6 or 8. Even so, it is hard to
spread around. What you should do is put a drop of two on the back of
your hand and spread it around just a tiny bit so it is still a think
coat, maybe one square inch. Then you dab that in many places over say
one leg, spaced around. Then and only then do you try to spread it
over the whole leg. You repeat for the other leg, the arms, and the
head.
Also, remember to apply an inch or two up inside loose clothing.

However, one of those tiny bottles lasts me a couple of months
of daily hiking, maybe more.

I use an improvised applicator when I use Ultrathon, but it should also work
as well with the pure stuff. I do this to make application easier and
handier, and also to keep the stuff off of my palms.

The applicator consists of one sandwich baggie, the old "fold top" style.

Put your hand in the bag, apply sufficient DEET product to the bag, then
invert the bag. Apply pressure to (squeeze the) bag to evenly distrubute
the DEET product from side to side, and a couple inches high in the bottom
of the bag.

Reinvert the bag, and use the baggie as the applicator. I find that if I
daub it on first, then go back and wipe it evenly, that I can get the most
uniform coverage that way.

Another helpful technique is to apply twice as much in the baggy as you need
for one application, then only use one side of the bag; this way you have a
reserve of sorts, or another application for another time.

The loaded bag can be neatly folded and placed in a pocket, for use at a
later time.
