Recommended at a mininum is a 9mm - packing in the woods
like a Glock 17/19/26. I usually pack my Glock 22 or Glock 23
when I go in the woods w/a lanyard I bought from:
Brigade Quartermaster or actiongear.com
You can attach a lanyard to a Glock 17/19 so when you climb
in the mountains or climb trees and whatnot, then you don't
lose your pistol.
IF you don't like semi-auto pistols, then at a minimum pack a
357 magnum revolver like a Ruger GP101 or similar model.
I don't care what those city-slicker or anti-gun people who
say bear pepper spray is better at night when the bear is
clawing and jumping on your tent. They are DEAD WRONG.
The bear is in predatory and hunting mode at night and will
kill campers at night for food.
Shoot the damn bear, and ask questions later. This isn't the
kind of teddy bear you sleep with at night.
Of course, you can't do the following in US National Parks - normally
you can't pack guns, except in a few places. But, you can pack guns
in US National Forests, and BLM areas. Hunters/hikers/backpackers
like me pack guns in US National Forests and BLM areas all the time
since it is legal.
Did you know that it is legal to target shoot and go plinking
in National Forests? In El Dorado National Forest near
anti-gun Sacramento, California, I had a friend who went plinking
with his .22LR and .25acp pistols, and he had no trouble
with park rangers. Don't be a city-slicker that just relies
on the police to protect you and do everything. Be like
the old West homesteader that always had firearms around
the log cabin to protect his family from bears, outlaws, and
Indians when there was no Sheriff or US Marshall around.

Have you ever even seen a bear? A guy was shot and killed a couple miles
behind my shack this weekend, by his friend (rifle deer season).

So, go look it up in a criminal law book. Negligent Homicide or
involuntary manslaughter for the friend.
The friend never had any true intent to kill his friend, just
accidently killed him and he will most likely
suffer civil damages by the survivors.
yep, i have seen bears in the wild
.
