Those mail addresses look vaguely familiar, or perhaps seems to by way of 'recovered memory', even at a 16 year remove, but you still give no dates.
I was a laboratory instrument maker at the University of Virginia for
many years, there was a machinist in the room behind mine, who was
also a laboratory instrument maker, I took care of the electrical
stuff. I was retired on disability (primary lateral sclerosis, a rare
condition described by many doctors as a kinder subset of amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis -- what Stephen Hawking has) in 1992, and had been
on USENET for several years before that. Google's got me going back
to Feb 90 in rec.backcountry, and back to '89 or so in some other
groups. But like I say, Google bought Deja News' archive, and even
that wasn't complete. I can't remember the exact date but it was
shortly after UVa got hooked up, somewhere after the "great renaming"
yet a fair number of posters included a line for the "line eater,"
which I think was a bug in some of the newsreader software in use at
the time. Perhaps some USENET historian can help us pin down the
date.
It's of no consequence. We clearly have similar ages on this newsgroup, and you have perhaps used it more. Because I'm a former mountaineering leader in the Sierra Club, CPR and First Aid instructor, ,and grew up in Alaska, perhaps I find less of value in the ng, and more NSDT than you do.
As for Usenet, I used it on one-line red diode HP 9825 and 9845 computers at Caltech in the 70s.

We can play battling posts or who outdates who, but it really doesn't
matter. I've been around long enough to know that complaining that a
newsgroup doesn't meet *your* expectations doesn't produce any results
that I've ever seen, and that is especially true in an unmoderated
group.
Ahh, but it has in my experience. My "Tanks in the Backcountry" posted to this ng twice back in 1991 and one more time in the heat of insane gun flame wars, which Eugene was just ignoring, had a very salutary effect. I attempted killfiling, but it was impossible to ditch more than a fraction of the kooks, so gave up killfiling forever. Reading a newsgroup overrun by garbage by irresponsible persons who keep changing their monikers is quite a waste of time and keeps out the responsible posters that have something useful or interesting to say. Keep your house clean. Your post in response to my comment, not whine or complaint as you prejudicially like to characterize it was not responsible or even intelligent in the least.
If you're willing to invest the time and effort (and possibly
some dollars) you can form your own moderated group. Being as how you
claim a fair amount of support and if the situation has gotten as bad
as you seem to think, I'd think setting up a parallel
rec.backcountry.moderated would be a snap for you. I know it has been
done recently with at least one USENET newsgroup. So, are you
actually going to do something or are you going to just whine?
Now that's what I would call a nasty remark. Get a grip. I've had only a few nasty and silly responses like yours. So maybe I have done some good that you don't recognize.
It is you who attacked me, not I you. Why are you so defensive and abusive? Not even this ng belongs to you. Are you trying to out-Kerberus me by trying to discourage the wrong persons? Any newsgroup can go astray, and it behooves responsible persons to call that to the other posters' attention. Of course, those with weak minds will just killfile such persons.
