Railing against the Sierra Club and Al Gore with false premises to
make them look silly and hypocritical does not remove the urgency of
the situation. The simple fact is, people didn't elect Al Gore and
the Sierra Club to lead them - they elected our worthless government,
who ought to be kicked out, lock stock and barrel, by the electorate
and replaced with people who give a sh&& about something besides their
careers. The government is ultimately the organ to do what must be
done to solve the problem - it isn't Al Gore or any scientist, or any
individual citizen - they don't have the power. It will take all,
collectively, and that means the government.
One hardly needs false premises to make Al Gore look silly.
All you really need to do is start cataloging the falsehoods in
his little home movie. For example, that CO2 and temperature
do go up and down in the ice core record, but temperature
rises, then some 100's of years later CO2 rises. And then
temperature falls, and some 100's of years later CO2 falls.
Often by as much as 800 years. Kind of difficult to understand
how *those* climate shifts could have been driven by CO2
when the CO2 trailed the temperature by several centuries.
Or the interesting little tidbit that he never mentioned that
the largest ocean rise predicted for the next century is less
than two feet. And that to produce the 20 foot increase he
talked about would require about 1000 years. And that these
are all the very upper limit of predictions of ocean level rise.
A rise of 20 inches or so per century seems quite manageable.
And if, in 1000 years, our technology has not advanced to the
point that these problems are not long since solved and
become trivial, then the people at that time deserve to be
in trouble. Right now, responsible people are advancing
science and technology everywhere they can. If nobody
gets in the road of that, we are going to see lots of really
nifty things. Provided, that is, we don't see "collective action"
to get in there and bust it up.
It's also kind of interesting how quickly "collective action" turns
up as a priority. Geeze. "Teach them to unite, to agree to obey!
That makes one neck ready for one whip." I bet you can't tell me
the source of *that* little quote. Do you suppose it's possible
that large parts of the hype on this issue are motivated by the
creation of "collective action" rather than any genuine concern
for the health and well being of humanity? Nah, you're too perfect.
It might also be nice if you would avoid dragging in any stray
opinion or fragment of emotion you happen to have laying around.
What you may think of "our worthless government" isn't really
all that relevant to the science of climate.
While I'm not all that familiar with the Sierra Club, I am familiar
with Greenpeace. And I tend to pay attention to what Patrick
Moore says about the org he helped start and later abandoned
because of what they had become.
So take your silly demagoguery and shove it. I have watched the high
tide mark rising over the decades near my home here, and I am sure
that the extra water isn't just pouring from the heavens. I see the
glaciers receding and the temps going upward decade by decade, and it
ain't because the sun is getting warmer by leaps and bounds. Scoff if
you like, but the world IS being affected, and not everyone can escape
(like you can).

You might want to make room in your ass for your own demagoguery.
