It turnes out the story of climber "lost" in Eldorado Park was staged.
Hundreds of people including fellow marines and his relatives searched
for him.
This follows another incident where a small boy who allegedly fell
out of a boat tied up considerable search, then recovery resources.
The kid had died in anotyher way and the drowning story
was a coverup.
Fortunately at least here such things are rare. We had one that we
suspect was due to the subject wanting to disappear (cops were after
him). Another one a year or two ago involved a teenage girl who staged
a disappearance and made it look like an abduction. She was found with
her boyfriend in Seattle and they charged her with a few crimes.
Depending on local law, faking getting lost in the wilderness may or
may not be illegal. It is certainly unethical and immoral and causes a
lot of volunteers to waste their time, as well as costing taxpayers for
the salaries of the deputies or whoever manages the search. Faking an
abduction usually comes under the heading of filing a false police
report but just not reporting in after a hike is more difficult to
prosecute.
I've heard of other cases elsewhere where it appears that a murder was
covered up by presenting it as a SAR event. Not good.
