The Plumber's Three Rules:
1. Payday is Friday
2. Water runs downhill
3. Don't lick your fingers.
I've heated a wrench a couple of times and lockwire once on
battery teminals. In the 172 it's really close to the engine mount,
and an inadvertent wrench contact between the positive terminal and
the mount tubing would require removal of the engine and mount, and
NDI and repair of the mount. Not funny at all.
Disconnect the ground cable first. Put the cover back on. Now
it's safe enough. Sometimes, though, it gets so you just take the
stupid thing out when you have to work near it.
I won't wear rings. Had a poster in the machine shop years ago
that displayed, in full color, a "degloving" injury as a means of
discouraging jewellry around the machinery. The guy's ring had snagged
some moving part and it had pulled the skin and meat two thirds of the
way down his finger. Bare bones. Caption: "Jewellry on the job:
sometimes it's not a pretty sight."
