me not to rush to solo at 8 hours, you didn't need to worry. I'll
solo when I'm ready to solo.
Concerning the wind, I have noticed a definite improvement in my
flying on base and final because of all this work in the wind. When
things happen in the plane I now know, almost as a reflex action,
whether I need rudder, or aileron or power. It felt good to realize I
at one point that I started reaching for the throttle and the action
wasn't preceded by either a statement by my instructor or a conscious
thought. I realized we were a little low so I reached down and pushed
in the throttle a little. That was the first time I really thought to
myself "I'm getting the hang of this."
After you wade though the posts in the thread you initiated, I hope you
realize without my saying so that I share your feeling of accomplishment
and wish you all the very best with your flying.
That having been said, I'm fairly certain that you have already noticed
that you omitted to say what your airspeed was when you found yourself
low on the approach and added power.
Keeping in mind that we are always dealing here with student pilots,
many of us who are CFI's will pick up on these things and elaborate for
others on the group so that a maximum benefit can be obtained from
someone's posting.
Such was the case here with your post.
In your specific case, you might very well have known as you were
posting that your airspeed was on target when you added power, but
because you might have forgotten to mention it or perhaps were not aware
of it, amplification was indicated.
Barry was correct in adding his comment about checking your airspeed
before using power as was my expansion of this issue. The purpose is
never to berate or discourage someone, but rather simply to insert
information that might be helpful to the poster, and if not the poster,
to other students reading the thread.
I'm sure you understand all this, and I only mention it in passing so
there's no misunderstanding.
The very best of luck to you with your flying, and if I can ever be of
help to you, just ask.

I do appreciate your adding this, though as a frequent USENET user for
my IT/programming career I know a hijacked thread when I see one.
Let me make a point perfectly clear so that there is no misunderstanding should by chance you and I meet again on this newsgroup.
This newsgroup differs from some other newsgroups you might be used to as that relates to "hijacking a thread".
Here we have student pilots coupled with flight instructors and other experienced pilots posting together all for the same PRIMARY purpose; that being flight safety and aviation education.
The experienced pilots and instructors functioning normally in this environment don't "hijack threads".
ANY comment put forth by a student pilot with 11 hours on this newsgroup is subject to comment from instructors. I suggest you expect this if you intend to post here on this group. If this bothers you, and you feel a thread of yours has been "hijacked" by an instructor who underposts your comment with what that instructor feels might need clarification, you might find the result of posting here less than expected.
In the case of your specific post that you believe was "hijacked", you posted as an 11 hour student saying you applied power to adjust the sink rate of your final approach. You did NOT state the airspeed that was present when you did this. Another poster, not myself, picked up on this and correctly added for the group that power is not added arbitrarily without referencing airspeed. I added to his correct comment with comment of my own on this issue.
This is NOT hijacking your thread! It is simply the normal procedure we follow on this specific newsgroup. Comment is made not to "hijack" threads, but to add additional information that might help make a point a bit more clear for EVERYBODY, not just the poster being used to make the additional comment.
It's fine that you have comment to make, and it's fine that you feel proud of accomplishing something with your flying. We encourage that on this newsgroup.
All this having been said, it is also not written in stone that you have to take the advice of anyone on this group including me. Who you choose to deal with or ignore here is entirely up to you
As for myself; I'm not encouraged at all by what I have seen transpire in the exchanges on this thread and will extricate myself from whatever you do on this newsgroup. I will however, post under you at any time I feel comment pertaining to flight safety and education is involved. I cordially invite you and other posters to freely engage me on that basis at any time.
Thank you
DH
