One thing that strikes me in thinking about this is that I need to
stop flying the controls and fly the airplane instead. I need to stop
thinking about applying right or left rudder, and think about
controlling the tail instead.
Think of flying this way.
Flying an airplane is nothing more than an ongoing contest between you and the airplane as that contest relates to what the airplane wants to do as opposed to what you want it to do. Either the airplane wins or you do. It's that simple. All flying consists of is a constant ongoing correction with the controls that corrects the airplane back to where you need it to be.
As you learn to fly, you will learn to use the controls with ever increasing sensitivity in making the airplane go where you want it to be in the sky. Finally, through practice, you will reach a stage of efficiency with using the controls that is so gentle and so smooth, that you will hardly even notice the extremely subtle pressures you are using to fly the aircraft.
What makes the difference between a beginning student pilot and a highly trained competent pilot is the time it takes to see and correct the difference between where the airplane wants to go and where you want it to be. The beginner takes a longer time to recognize when the aircraft is doing the flying and correct that back to where the beginner is doing the flying. The trained pilot recognizes instantly when the aircraft wants to be somewhere else than desired by the pilot and the corrective action taken is so smooth and instantainous that someone riding in the right seat might not even notice correction has been made.
So take heart. All it takes to become a good pilot really is PRACTICE....PRACTICE.....PRACTICE!!!! :-))
