Re: Email to my CFI this evening (with a view WINKS and GRINS)

Correct words are important. Most of the new generation of
"undercarriage" is held up by maintaining system pressure.
There is a pressure switch that will cycle the pump ON if
the pressure drops below a certain value and turns the pump
OFF when the limit pressure is reached. If you do a number
of take-off and landings the fluid gets hot and expands.
Then when the flight continues and the fluid cools the
pressure drops, the switch powers the electric motor and the
pump builds pressure back up and keeps the gear fully
retracted. If you listen, you may hear the pump cycle in
flight. But if you hear a continuous on-off cycle, you
probably have an internal leak in the pump or actuator. I
know that in the Beech aircraft they have a timer on the
pump so power will be interrupted if the pump runs
continuously for an excessive period.

So airplanes may have actual up-locks and these will hold
the gear up until you use the mechanical or air bottle to
release the locks. All airplanes will have a mechanical,
usually over center, down lock. Some airplanes have what
seems like strange systems, the Beechjet uses engine driven
hydraulic pumps for many systems, including the landing
gear. The emergency procedure dumps the pressure and the
gear free-falls, pushing the gear doors open in the process.
The gear doors are longer than the landing gear, so they
have a nitrogen bottle to pressurize the line and blow the
gear doors closed. This is just for background, to point
out that there are too many variations for you to say more
than "your aircraft may vary." Know the aircraft you are
flying and know that each model [even yearly model changes]
can have very different systems.

Back on the subject of words... years ago a co-worker CFI
and I went out to get some time in the Beech Baron. He said
several times "when I shut down an engine you be sure to
shut the right engine down." So when he pulled the mixture
on the left engine I shut the right engine down, just as we
had said. After a brief silence, we started the engine back
up.

Port, number 1, correct, in-op, dead, failed, but right is
not the same as correct.

Have fun, you will learn more from your first 50 students
than they learn from you. Also, new CFIs tend to be slow
with soloing their first few students. If you have several
pre-solo students at the same time, you will probably be
extra careful and cautious. After the first one solos, they
all will in short order because you will have gotten over
your hump.

a line the gear
