Yeah, slow the plane down the best you can b4 impact. Open the cabin door
before impact.
This is damned good advice. In my own near fatal accident, the damned cabin
deformed and they had to cut us out of the airplane. Pop the door open shortly
before touchdown and lock it so it can't relatch. Just as if you were
ditching....
The slower the better.
I'd rather clip something going fast than hit something head on going slow.
Don't forget to turn off the ignition and kill the master before touchdown.
This is something we pay lip service to but my experience was that I did what I
had actually practiced, ie, I pulled back the throttle and prop but didn't
actually cut the fuel off until I was reminded. If I'd been alone I probably
wouldn't have remembered at all.
Wings fall off if you hit something hard. With any luck you'll leave the fuel
supply behind you somewhere.
Oh, yeah... I don't care how inconvenient or uncomfortable the shoulder strap
is. If there's one to wear, put it on. The seat belt is enough to hold you in
but you're going to break more bones without the shoulder strap. Trust me.
Let somebody know you're crashing before you do it. Don't be afraid to say the
magic word: "Mayday!". I had somebody circling overhead within 10 minutes of
crashing and had somebody at the site on the ground within 15 minutes. That
wouldn't have happened if nobody knew there was an aircraft in distress.
