<<So, at small AOA's (whatever small is defined to be), I'd be right,
and at larger AOA's, you'd be right.>>
Yep. Isn't it nice when everyone can be right? ;-)
<<This certainly makes sense. If the vortex is strong enough, the
velocity below the wing would be slower than freestream.>>
Yes. Interestingly, I've read that the drag on gear is less when
flaps are extended. The increased circulation slows the air below the
wing so that the gear experiences a smaller q-pressure. That's why
you merely can't take the drag of the flaps and the drag of the gear
and add them together.
<<Eventually, the velocity on the bottom will equal freestream
velocity, and then be slower.>>
That's my understanding, yes.
<<What's your definition of "small angle of attack"?>>
Argh, I'm sure that depnds on the airfoil. In "Theory of Wing
Sections", it shows an airfoil on page 62 that is at an AOA of 8
degrees. Of course, that's not "small", but the air pressure is
strongly positive on the bottom, although not nearly as negative as
the top. I probably have a better range of data somewhere, but it's
always hard to put my hands on what I want. I need a *master* index.
